Competitions

The New Forest Runners Juniors compete in a wide range of national, country and local cross country, road, track and trail races. We encourage all members to enter events, be they highly competitive races or recreational events! The performance program is designed for athletes to compete in the Hampshire Track and Field Championships (Summer) and Hampshire Cross Country Championships (Winter). Please click on the title to find out event details.

Cross Country

The winter cross country season is great way to keep fit, build strength and aerobic running.

Hampshire Cross Country League

This is the premier league of cross country events. Hampshire is one of the strongest teams in the UK and this is where they train! This is a set of 5 races at various places around Hampshire on Saturday afternoons over the winter period.

Hampshire Cross Country Championships

The Hampshire cross country championships is where all that hard training pays off! It is usually held on the first Saturday of the new year and is a big event for the club. Last year we had 60 juniors enter!

This race is used for selection to the intercounties and nationals, held in February and March.

CC6

In contrast to the Hampshire Cross Country League, the CC6 league is all about fun! It's for all ages 15+, all abilities and usually involves tea/coffee & loads of cake. 6 Races starting at 9:30am on Sundays around the New Forest.

Wessex Cross Country League

For younger members who cannot race in the Hampshire Cross Country League, the wessex is a series of 4 races held primarily in Dorset and caters for younger members.

RR10

Most popular race league in the south? maybe, but 10 summer cross country races of 400 competitors shows how popular and important this series is! Ages 15+.

Track

Cross country builds strength and endurance, but track is where we can perfect the running form to attain the maximum speed and efficency, The New Forest Runners provide specific weekly coaching sessions on an IAAF track over the summer months leading up to the county championships.

Hampshire Track and Field Championships

Our summer training plan targets the Hampshire Track and Field Championships, usually taking place over the last weekend in May. We encourage all younger members to take part, trying a couple of sprint and middle/long distance event so they can gain experience of track racing. The older members will have selected their event distance and will have training specifically for this distance.

Open Meetings

We attend open meetings at local athletics clubs, These include:

  • Bournemouth John Rumbold
  • Portsmouth/Havant Open meetings
  • Southampton Open Meetings
  • Andover Junior Athletics Meetings

Quadkids

Our quadkids have been running for 2 years, so we are still getting to grips with competitions! We have entered our juniors in the championships and Quadkids open events and everyone really enjoyed it!

The QuadKids competitions are a fixed format: 75m sprint, 600m run, Vortex throw and long jump, supervised by officials who are only to glad to help and offer advice!

Hampshire Quadkids Championships

Road

Hampshire Road Race League

While not all races are suited for junior runners due to the large distances, we enter our older junior athletes into the shorter distances (10K's).

Trail

We had entered junior teams for the South Downs Way Trail Marathon.
